My first snapshots of a lesser spotted woodpecker!

I watched this lesser-spotted woodpecker in Egypt Wood for some time. Greger's Nikon Coolpix 995 did its best but as can be seen from the top uncropped pic, the bird was distant and high. I'm fairly sure it was a female.

A comma butterfly was on the wing and three buzzards circled overhead. A marsh tit was seen near the green pool, then it was over the stile for me and back into the madness of Burnham Beeches to retrieve my car.

A late, damp walk in Burnham Beeches brought a lesser spotted woodpecker. I was able to track it for some time as it worked its way through the trees, but it was high up in the canopy and I couldn't tell whether it was male or female. This was close to my February 1999 sighting.

A weasel running across the track was the only other thing of note.
