I walked from home on this grey day with no sun; along the river path, round the spit, and through the camp-site. Along Old Moss Road, a reddish animal went bounding across the road - a sighting so brief that I couldn't tell if I was looking at a weasel or a squirrel. Probably the former.

From the camp-site I watched common dolphins making their way up the loch over near the opposite bank. By the time I reached the point at the end of West Shore Street, they had crossed the loch and were active below the Braes of Ullapool.

Eventually they made their way back down the loch, passing quite close to the point.

They were compensation for the lack of birds on my walk. No waxwings or bramblings, not even any winter thrushes; and meanwhile the rowan berries are being scoffed by blackbirds and wood pigeons. We had a similarly bird-poor pelagic on the MV Isle of Lewis on Monday. The most interesting thing I saw was this landslip on Tanera Beag....

.....and I couldn't even get a decent photo of that (I blame the vibrations)! It looks precarious, but from what I can gather, it's fairly ancient. The outer decks were more crowded than we're used to on the old ferry at this time of the year - however, there was still plenty of room for everyone. It was rougher than we'd bargained for, although that made it quite exciting; and it was very, very cold!
